ROBERT (BOB) GRIERSON – STARLIGHT WISH
MEET AND GREET WITH LARS ULRICH, JAMES HETFIELD,
KIRK HAMMETT AND ROB TRUJILLO
METALLICA WORLD MAGNETIC TOUR

I am writing to thank you and your team for making Bob’s Starlight Wish ‘happen’.

We had the most amazing night and were all excited in the weeks leading up to it.  From the moment we stepped into Billy Hyde Music Greg and Steve made Bob feel like a ‘rock star’ and bent over backwards to make him feel special.  They had put a lot of thought into what to give Bob for Lars to sign and had a promotional mounted poster of Lars ‘in full flight’ playing drums – which has now been signed and has a prized position in Bob’s room.  They also had a goodie bag for him which had a special Zildjian Cymbal as they were aware of Bob also being a ‘drummer’.  We were then able to use the $100 gift voucher to buy a Pro Cymbal Pack which will complete his drum kit.

When Monday night arrived we all waited out front for the Hummer to arrive.  My 82 year old mother and a friend were also there to wave us goodbye.  Ron, the driver, allowed them to come along for the ride to the Entertainment Centre and they then caught a bus home.  What a great experience for my mother.  Bob sat up the back with a big grin on his face and enjoyed the crisps and cool drinks offered.  Ron made us all feel comfortable and it was quite obvious he loves his job.  We were dropped off at the front of Entertainment Centre and made arrangements with Ron on how to meet up again after the concert.  Brilliant!!! Thank you to Hummer SA for your generosity.

We were then met by Lisa Matthews (Starlight Volunteer) who made arrangements to be met by the Metallica Crew.

Whisked away through to backstage where we observed the ‘roadies’ setting up.  We were taken to a room with a couple of lounge chairs and prepared ourselves for the long wait until it was our turn to be seen by the band.  Surprisingly we didn’t have to wait long – First in was Kirk Hammett, then Rob Trujillo, Lars Ulrich and last was the ‘larger than life’ James Hetfield.  Each of them stayed with us for around 10/15 minutes and chatted away to us almost as if we were their friends.  They all made us feel at ease and were great with Bob – talking about music, drumming, whether it was safe to surf in Adelaide waters, and they were also interested to hear of Bob’s health issues.  At no time did we feel we were holding them up and they gave us the impression of enjoying our company.  They have all ‘matured’ since their early days and have been performing now for 30 years.  Touring schedules are not as hectic and they mainly do two week tours and spend two weeks at home.  They all have young families and are eager to spend time with them.

Lars asked Bob which was his favourite song and during the concert James dedicated it ‘to a family who had been through hard times and had come out stronger’.  The song is called Broken, Beat and Scarred.  Lars also sent someone with a note to Bob midway through the concert asking Bob to join him on stage for the ‘countdown’ to Seek and Destroy.  Unfortunately Bob declined his offer as he would have missed viewing the final 5 or so songs (we had a really good view of the concert) he also worried he might not have done a good job on the drums.  Bob also said he really wanted to just ‘relax’ and enjoy the concert. What an experience that would have been!  So my son is - The kid who declined an offer by Lars Ulrich to play drums on stage in front of  10,500 ‘metal heads’.  In hindsight he probably made the correct decision.

If there is any way you can forward our thanks to Metallica for being such ‘gentlemen’ in giving our son their unreserved time it would be appreciated.  They all came across as being genuine caring guys who treated us as part of the ‘Metallica Family’.  We will all remember this experience for ever!!! Lars even raced off and made Bob one of his Protein/Berry Shakes which they sat and drank together. Wow!!

I would also like to express my interest in becoming a volunteer for the Starlight Foundation.  I will look into this as our situation has recently improved.  Starlight has brought so much joy and happiness to my family and I want to contribute in some way.

Regards
